What Started SwamSwimming News?
Swimming is not a very popular sport, especially in Indiana. After what Mark Spitz and then Michael Phelps did, the sport grew a lot from what it was, but still doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
One day I was walking the school halls and heard the principle speak over the intercom about this upcoming basketball game. We had a huge meet that week too, and all season our team has had great accomplishments but not once did it get recognized. The basketball team wasn't anything special but that didn't stop our principle's favoritism. The principle went on saying about how there was a swim meet tonight. Our team against some other team but then started talking about the basketball game that was going to happen that night and how he wanted the whole student body there cheering and everything. You could just tell in his voice that swimming didn't matter to him and how basketball trumps all. I was more than shocked. What about us swimmers? A lot of School's swim teams will actually be the school's most successful sports team but only Basketball and Football matters. In February 2013 I got with some of my buds and we talked over how we wanted to change that. We wanted to start a group that would show that swimming is interesting and fun and there is a lot about the sport that people didn't see or know because they never gave it a chance. We wanted to make it stick out to people. On the 16th of February we started our Twitter just for the fun and love of it. We started to get a lot of love for our simple work so we wanted to raise the bar. All we want is those empty bleachers to be filled every meet. All we want is more kids to say I want to try this sport out. All we want is School's to recognize true talent, not just what's popular. All we want is for swimmers to feel like they are special, that they are not wasting their time. We want swimmers to share our dream with us. SwamSwimming lives to raise the bar of Swimming in the state of Indiana. |
