Jay County Indiana is home to the Jay County High School swim team, a swim team that has had huge success on the big stage in the recent years. JCHS's Bob Morrison was a state champion back in 85 in the 100 yard freestyle. The stars in Jay County's pool today are two juniors who are cousins. One is backstroke specialist Anne Vormohr. "I really love swimming for Jay County. My teammates and coaches are the absolute best. My older brother and sister both swam for Jay County, so I am just following in their footsteps. I also swim with my younger brother and two cousins. I really enjoy the small team aspect. We also have a lot of community support." Jay County is a small town with lots of heart. The community supports one another. Just ask Vormohr. "Our local newspaper always has someone present at home swim meets taking pictures and publishing results. The local radio also announces results, and so the community hears about the success of the swim team. That is one great thing about living in a small town." Jay County may be small but it loves to race. Vormohr is a perfect example of that. As a sophomore she was the sectional winner in the 100 freestyle and finished third in the consolation final of the 100 backstroke at the IHSAA state meet last season. Her cousin Sophia Bader is also star in her own rights. Bader also advanced to the state meet last season. Vormohr has stated her main goal is to go 56 seconds in the 100 backstroke and to medal at the state meet. Maybe she can get her cousin to help her with those goals. "I practice in the lane beside my cousin, Sophie Bader, and we race each other on every set." Vormohr has become a standout swimmer not just for Jay County but in Indiana and it is all thanks to her family who has trained her every since she was a little girl. "My mom and aunt are two of the team's coaches also my older sister is my summer city team coach. At times, it can be very frustrating. However, I enjoy having them there on the pool deck with me day after day. Weekend swim meets are especially fun because they are spent with lots of family. (But thank goodness for my high school coach). It definitely makes me work harder." It is a huge family affair. Vormohr's two younger brothers also swim for Jay County. One is a junior on the swim team and the the youngest suffers from Down Syndrome. Vormohr stated life is no different because of it. "It has never been a big deal. He does everything that the rest of the family does, and we try to treat him the same." At age the young age of ten Vormohr became a state champion in the 50 backstroke at the Indiana Age Group State meet and she is not the only one. "We have had several Age Group State champions. I am proud to be from a small team that can still compete with the large powerhouses." The Jay County junior has big goals for herself and plans to swim in college just like her big sister did, even though she is not completely sure where she would like to go. "My sister swam four years in college, and I hope to do the same while maintaining good grades. I have set goals that I am constantly striving to accomplish." Vormohr's unique life has made her the athlete she is today. The junior is ready to jump back in the water to accomplish those goals. One thing is clear, If things do not go as planned this year, there is always the following year which will be her senior one. She will be someone to watch out for this season. When asked if someone were to walk up to her and ask her who she was, she had this to say; "Anne is a student, athlete, a girl that loves to spend time with family and friends. She enjoys helping and including others. (This year, I started Best Buddies at my high school. I have spent the majority of the beginning of my junior year getting the club started.) |
