What does Rensselaer's Sophie Michael, Lauren McGowan, Hannah Hall and Hailey Henry all have in common? They all share the same records. During Saturday's PSSL championship meet the foursome won the girls 13 and 14 200 freestyle relay in a record breaking time of 1:53.50. Sophie Michael had a strong lead off leg for the relay. "It was a perfect meet! I was a little disappointed with my backstroke time, but beating the free relay record made the day unforgettable. My performance has not quite set in yet. I just know that I am beyond proud of myself and my relay team." Said record breaker Sophie Michael. Earlier in the season the foursome broke the 200 medley relay record as well. Sophie Michael also broke the girls 13 and 14 100 backstroke record. "Before the season started, my teammates and I had looked at the record times for both the medley and the freestyle relays and we saw that our times were close to the records, so I thought we could do it." said record breaker Hannah Hall. Hall seemed a bit more pleased with her swims though. She got a 2nd place finish in the 50 free to teammate Henry and 3rd in the 100 breaststroke. "I PRd in several of my events and placed top three in all of them at PSSLs. I think the main goal really this season was to break those records. There is no better feeling than achieving something you have worked so hard for. " "The feeling is really hard to describe. I was so excited and so proud of my relay team because we worked so hard for it. To see everyone celebrating along with us was amazing. It really shows how much everyone believed in us as well, and that was a great feeling. It was really an amazing feeling." Hall, McGowan and Michael's splits were impressive but may not have been good enough for the record if it was not for Henry's blistering 27.45 she anchored with. "I think that process is still happening for me. We had a pretty good lead from the beginning of the meet and held it all the way until the end. The entire team worked so hard. It's crazy to think it's been so long since we have won. I was 8 when we last won and that was one of my first years swimming for RSST. I think RSST will be the team to beat for a while." RSST finally beat Monticello's long winning streak. Final score was RSST - 814 MSST - 720. |
