During the U.S. Phillips 66 National Championship meet incoming IU freshman Blake Pieroni broke a 38-year-old long course record in the 100 meter freestyle. The record was so old the last person to set it was Jim Montgomery. Montgomery was a member of the U.S. Montreal Olympic team. Pieroni first broke it when he posted a 49.90 and then lowered his own mark later when he tied for first with Townley Haas to win the C-Final in 49.69. IU senior Steve Schmuhl broke the school record in the 200 right in a time of 1:49.52 just before Pieroni broke it in prelims with a blistering 1:49.26 |
