Lake Central - The Lake Central Indians will have to figure out a way to succeed without Holly Spears and Tracilyn Muszalski who they have lost due to graduation. Spears was the sectional champion in both the 100 and 50 freestyle and Muszalski was an outstanding IMer as well. The loss is great but thanks to a big junior and senior class coming in the season looks bright for the Indians. SWIMMERS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Victoria Springman, a junior, had a stellar swim season last year as a sophomore. She held her own against some of the state's best in the two fastest events, the 100 and 50 free and placed fourth in both events. Both Spears and third place finisher in the 50 free Racheal Bukowski of Crown Point have graduated. You can count on Springman taking advantage of this and making some even bigger strides this season. Springman could make it a back-to-back sectional win for the Indians in both events. Marina Vasquez, a junior, was the fifth swimmer out of eight in the championship final of the 100 butterfly to break a minute. She has the skill to move up and score big points for her team. Vasquez also placed fourth in the 100 backstroke just barley breaking a minute in the event but only four out of the eight swimmers in this event were able to do so. She will be a factor in all the events she swims this season. Jessica Lopez, a junior, will be needed for her speed for the relays. She placed eighth in both the 100 and 50 freestyle events at last year's sectional championship final. The Indians will need to rely on Lopez's speed to fuel their 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Hailey Garlich, a senior, will be needed greatly in the breaststroke event for the Indians. Garlich was one of only two swimmers from her team in the championship final of this event. The other swimmer, Brianna Shoemaker, has graduated. The team will look to Garlich to help fill in the cracks. She is also a very accomplished backstroker as she led the Indians to a third place finish in the 200 medley relay with a strong backstroke leg. She was also the third leg in the Indians third place 400 freestyle relay. THE HEROES: Lake Central will need every point they can get against Crown Point and Munster. A lot of their success will come from the pool but maybe just as much will come from the board. Lake Central's divers made a huge difference last season in the team scores when they got first, second and third in the diving competition. Even though the sectional champion Abigail Prince is gone, they still have third place finisher Hannah Leyba and second place Kallie Higgins. Higgins only got second to her teammate by sixteen points and that was as a freshman. This season Higgins has a chance to surpass Abigail's performance on the board. |
