Highland - Highland had some great accomplishments at last season's sectional. They placed fourth overall and even had state success. Jesenia Zendejas was a strong points contributor last year but this year Highland will have to find a way to succeed without Zendejas who has graduated. Highland will need to fill some events like the butterfly if they want to have any chance of beating KV or Rensselaer this sectional season but the Trojans still have a few strong competitors making a return. SWIMMERS TO WATCH OUT FOR: Chloe Jarmula, a Senior, has a big role to play this season. She is the only returning Trojan swimmer that was in the 100 freestyle event at last season's sectional. This being Jarmula's senior year you can expect her to move up in the rankings to score big points for her Highland teammates. Mikayla Goetz, a Senior, was fourth in the consolation final of the 500 and 200 freestyle last season. The Trojans will look to her to fill in the endurance races. Highland is well known as a sprint program, and to have a distance swimmer like Goetz coming back will help the team out tremendously. Hannah Johnson, a Senior, swam the IM last season and excelled well in it. She placed fifth in the consolation final. Johnson is battling some of the best swimmers in the state in this event but that should only improve her skills. UP AND COMERS: Grace Miedema, a Sophomore, was Highland's second breaststroker but with Marie Stockton gone they will be looking to her to step up in this event. She finished sixth in the consolation final of this event as a freshman so Miedema has lots of time to improve and learn. Heroes: Jacklyn Smailis, a Senior, is one to watch out for in the backstroke events. Not only did she take the sectional win but she ended up placing fifth in the consolation final at the state meet. She also placed fifth in the 50 freestyle at sectionals. Smailis will return to the 100 backstroke this coming sectionals and unless the likes of Crown Point's Tetzloff is thrown into that event, Samilis has a good chance to repeat as sectional champion. |
